Puhtaanääniaudiometria

Puhtaanääniaudiometria, also known as pure-tone audiometry, is a fundamental audiological test used to measure an individual's hearing threshold at different frequencies. This objective measurement helps determine the softest sound a person can hear at various pitches, ranging from low bass sounds to high treble sounds. The test is typically conducted in a sound-treated booth to eliminate external noise interference.

During the procedure, the individual wears headphones. A series of pure tones, each at a specific frequency, are presented at varying intensities. The patient is instructed to signal whenever they hear a sound, usually by raising a hand or pressing a button. The audiologist then identifies the lowest intensity level at which the sound is audible for a specified number of times. This process is repeated for each frequency tested.

The results of puhtaanääniaudiometria are plotted on an audiogram, a graph that visually represents the hearing levels. The x-axis indicates the frequency in Hertz (Hz), and the y-axis represents the intensity in decibels (dB HL), with lower numbers indicating softer sounds. The resulting line or series of points on the audiogram illustrates the individual's hearing sensitivity across the audible spectrum. This information is crucial for diagnosing hearing loss, determining its type and degree, and guiding appropriate treatment or management strategies. It is a non-invasive and painless procedure widely used in clinical settings, schools, and occupational health programs.
