Puhelinkeskustelu is a spoken exchange between two or more participants conducted via a telephone or other voice communication channel. It is characterized by real-time interaction over a telecommunication network, and it can take place on landline, mobile, or Voice over IP systems.

Historically, the concept developed with telephone networks and has evolved from analog landlines to digital mobile networks and IP-based services. A typical call follows a sequence of stages: dialing or answering, connection establishment, conversational turn-taking, and eventual termination. Modern systems also provide features such as call hold, transfer, conferencing, voicemail, caller identification, and call recording.

Linguistically, telephone conversations exhibit specific patterns: reduced overlap, explicit turn-taking signals, and sometimes increased formality or politeness due to the absence of full nonverbal cues. In Finnish usage, greetings, identification of participants, and clarifications are common, and the choice of pronouns and formality can reflect social distance and context.

Puhelinkeskustelu is widely used in personal communication, business calls, and customer service. With the rise of mobile and broadband communications, VoIP and video calls have complemented or partially replaced traditional telephone conversations in many contexts, while the basic social functions—information exchange, relationship maintenance, and coordination—remain central.
