Puhaltimet (blowers or fans) are machines that move air or gas by imparting momentum to it with rotating blades. They are used to create air flow for ventilation, cooling, drying, combustion air, and various industrial processes. In general, puhaltimet are designed to generate a flow with a manageable pressure increase, rather than large pressure rises.

There are two main aerodynamic families: axial and centrifugal (radial) puhaltimet. Axial puhaltimet push air parallel to the shaft and are typically efficient for high-volume, low-pressure applications such as general ventilation and electronics cooling. Centrifugal puhaltimet use a rotating impeller inside a housing to impart energy to the air, yielding higher static pressure at lower flow rates; they are common in dust collection, blow-off rooms, and applications requiring pressurized air.

Key components include a motor or drive, an impeller or rotor, a housing or casing, and an inlet and outlet. Some units are belt-driven, while others are direct-drive. Performance is described by volumetric flow (cubic meters per hour or CFM) and pressure rise or static pressure (Pascals or inches of water). Noise, efficiency, and power consumption are also important design considerations.

Applications span buildings HVAC and ventilation, industrial process air supply, electronics and equipment cooling, drying and aeration, and agricultural or horticultural environments. Selection depends on required flow, pressure, efficiency, noise constraints, and the nature of the gas or air being moved, including dust or moisture content.

Maintenance and safety involve regular inspection of bearings and seals, lubrication where appropriate, cleaning of dust buildup, and monitoring for unusual vibration or noise. Compliance with applicable standards and safety regulations is typical in industrial installations.
