Publikaties are works that are publicly released and disseminated by authors or organizations. In Dutch usage the term covers a broad range of outputs, from scholarly articles to books, reports, standards, datasets, and multimedia materials.

Common categories include journal articles, conference papers, book chapters, monographs, technical reports, policy briefs, theses, and datasets. Depending on the field, publikaties may appear in academic journals, publishers’ platforms, institutional repositories, or government portals.

The publication process typically involves writing, peer review or editorial assessment, editing and production, distribution, and rights management. For many scholarly publikaties, identifiers such as a digital object identifier (DOI), an ISBN for books, or an ISSN for serials are assigned to enable precise citation and tracking. Metadata about the author, date, venue, and affiliations supports discovery and reuse.

Access models vary from traditional subscription-based publishing to open access, sometimes with embargo periods. Publikaties can be hosted by publishers, universities, or national repositories, and licensing terms—such as Creative Commons—determine reuse rights and restrictions.

Discoverability is enhanced by indexing in bibliographic databases and by standardized metadata. Researchers often use ORCID identifiers to connect works to researchers. The integrity of publikaties is maintained through corrections, errata, and, when necessary, retractions.

In the research landscape, publikaties play a central role in knowledge dissemination, scholarly communication, and compliance with funding and policy requirements, including open science and data-management mandates.
