Pseudosuolijä, also known as pseudosheath lens fungus or sexual reproduction fungus, is a type of fungus that belongs to the family Helotiaceae. It is a parasitic organism that grows on the lenses of some camera equipment, particularly in warm and humid environments.

The fungus produces a soft, furry growth that covers the lens, often beginning with a rounded or elliptical shape and spreading to cover the entire surface. This growth causes the lens to become sticky and can even leave resilient residues on the lens when attempting to remove it.

The pseudosuolijä fungus reproduces sexually by releasing spores that combine with the gametes of other fungi to form hyphae, or branching filaments. As these hyphae grow, they fragment and produce new spores, starting the reproductive cycle anew.

Pseudosuolijä fungi are typically associated with lenses made of polycarbonate or other similar materials. Rigid lenses, such as those made of glass or metal, are less susceptible to fungal growth. In extreme cases, fungal growth can necessitate the disposal of the affected lens or camera equipment.

Prevention of pseudosuolijä growth includes maintaining a clean and dry lens, storing camera equipment in a cool, dry place, and using lens cleaning products specifically designed to mitigate fungal growth. In many cases, removing and cleaning the lens with mild detergents or wipes can resolve the issue.
