Pseudopodistia is an order of ancient armored fish that lived during the Devonian period. They are characterized by their distinctive body shape and armor plating. Compared to other early armored fish, pseudopodistians had a more rounded body shape and a unique armor plating arrangement.

Fossil records indicate that pseudopodistians lived in shallow, coastal waters during the Early to Middle Devonian, approximately 416 to 393 million years ago. Some of the earliest pseudopodistian fossils have been found in modern-day Poland and Morocco. These early fossils were relatively small, measuring around 10 to 20 centimeters in length.

As pseudopodistians evolved, they developed more complex armor plating and a more robust body shape. Some species also exhibited facial plates and cheek plates, which may have served to protect their head and gills. While there is limited information on the behavior of pseudopodistians, it is likely that they were bottom-dwellers, feeding on invertebrates and small fish that lived on the seafloor.

Pseudopodistians became extinct at the end of the Devonian period. The exact cause of their extinction is unclear, but it is believed to be related to a combination of factors, including changes in ocean chemistry, reduced sea levels, and increased species competition. Despite their relatively short history, pseudopodistians are significant because they provide a glimpse into the early evolution of armored fish, a group that would go on to play a crucial role in the development of modern fish fauna.
