Prototype filters are finite impulse response filters used as the reference or base filter in multirate digital signal processing. In uniform subband filter banks, a single prototype filter is designed and then converted into a bank of analysis and synthesis filters by a process such as modulation or polyphase decomposition. The resulting bank separates a signal into multiple frequency bands with minimal distortion and aliasing.

Design goals for prototype filters include passing frequencies of interest with low ripple, suppressing aliasing and image components, and achieving sufficient stopband attenuation. Typical design methods include windowing (for example, Hamming or Blackman windows), equiripple optimization (Parks–McClellan), and least-squares techniques. The filter length determines transition width and aliasing performance; longer prototypes provide sharper transitions but higher computational load.

In polyphase or cosine-modulated filter banks, the prototype filter is decomposed into polyphase components and combined with down- or up-sampling to form the subband filters. The prototype’s symmetry, when present, yields linear phase and reduces computational complexity, aiding efficient real-time implementation. Prototype filters are also used in wavelet-based multiresolution analysis, where a common prototype scaling filter defines successive decomposition levels.

Applications of prototype filters span audio and image processing, subband coding, telecommunications, and multirate converters. The concept provides a unifying framework for designing efficient filter banks and related multirate systems, enabling flexible control over bandwidth separation and reconstruction accuracy.
