protoplanetêre
A protoplanet is a celestial body that is thought to be in the process of formation and evolution from the accretion of dust and gas in a protoplanetary disk. These objects are precursors to planets. The term "protoplanetêre" itself is the French adjective referring to something related to a protoplanet or its formation. When discussing the early stages of planetary system development, scientists refer to protoplanetary disks, which are rotating disks of dense gas and dust surrounding young stars. Within these disks, gravitational instabilities and collisions between smaller particles lead to the growth of larger bodies. Protoplanets are considered to be intermediate-sized objects that have grown large enough to dominate their orbital region through gravitational attraction, clearing out much of the surrounding material. They are larger than planetesimals, which are the building blocks of protoplanets, but have not yet fully accreted all available material or achieved their final planetary mass and orbital characteristics. The study of protoplanets is crucial for understanding how planets, including those in our own solar system, originally formed. Observations of protoplanetary disks and the detection of young exoplanets provide valuable insights into the processes that lead to the existence of diverse planetary systems.
