Process disorders, also known as process addictions, are compulsive behaviors that interfere with daily life and personal relationships. Unlike substance addictions, process addictions involve engaging in activities that provide a sense of reward or escape. These activities can include gambling, shopping, eating, sex, work, exercise, or the internet. Process disorders are characterized by a loss of control over the behavior, continued engagement despite negative consequences, and a preoccupation with the activity.

- Preoccupation with the activity
- Withdrawal symptoms when attempting to reduce or stop the behavior
- Tolerance, where more of the activity is needed to achieve the same effect
- Persistent desire or unsuccessful efforts to cut down or control the behavior
- A great deal of time spent on the activity
- Important social, occupational, or recreational activities given up or reduced because of the behavior
- Continued engagement in the activity despite knowledge of having a persistent or recurrent physical or psychological
