Proportionality is a relationship between two quantities in which one quantity changes in a constant ratio to the other. In mathematics, a direct proportionality means there exists a constant k such that y = kx. The constant k is called the constant of proportionality and fixes the rate at which y changes with x. For all pairs (x, y) in the relation, the ratio y/x remains the same.

Inverse proportionality describes a different type of proportionality where y is proportional to the reciprocal of x: y = k/x. Here the product xy equals the constant k, and as x increases, y decreases such that their product stays constant.

Graphically, directly proportional relationships form straight lines through the origin, with slope equal to k. Inverse proportional relationships produce a hyperbola, with the product xy equal to k.

Proportional relationships appear across science and everyday life. Examples include speed as distance divided by time (for a given time, distance is proportional to speed), density as mass per volume, and scaling in models where a system preserves proportionate relationships as size changes. In chemistry and physics, proportionality underpins many laws and calculations, while in economics, quantities such as marginal cost or revenue can exhibit proportional behavior under simplifying assumptions.
