In everyday language, proklínat can also be used metaphorically to mean speaking ill of someone or condemning something strongly, though this is typically not about magical harm.

The verb proklínat is formed with the prefix pro- attached to the root klít, meaning to curse or swear, and proklínání is the noun form of the action. The related noun kletba also denotes a curse or curse-like power, and both terms appear in historical, literary, and folkloric contexts.

Historically and culturally, proklínání appears in folklore, religion, and literature as part of beliefs about magical or divine intervention. Folk traditions sometimes linked curses to specific causes, such as harm to a person, a family line, a place, or an object, and to protective or counter-rituals designed to lift or negate a curse.
