Prohyytymisen is a Finnish term sometimes used in medical literature to denote the early or pre-coagulation phase of hemostasis, i.e., the events that precede the formation of a stable blood clot. The expression is not universally standardized, and in many contexts it is used informally to describe the initial steps that lead from vascular injury to a developing clot. Etymologically, it combines pro- (before) with hyytyminen (coagulation or clotting).

In physiological terms, prohyytymisen refers to the initial cascade of events following vessel injury. Endothelial damage exposes subendothelial structures and von Willebrand factor, enabling platelets to adhere and become activated. Activated platelets release granule contents such as ADP and thromboxane A2, promote further platelet recruitment, and contribute to the formation of an initial platelet plug. At the same time, early components of the coagulation cascade may be engaged, leading to a rise in thrombin and the beginning of fibrin formation. The phase is often viewed as a transitional stage between primary hemostasis (platelet plug formation) and secondary hemostasis (stabilization of the clot with a fibrin network).

Clinical relevance of prohyytymisen lies in its influence on bleeding risk and thrombotic potential, and it can affect interpretations of tests that assess initial hemostatic function.
