The term is related to the English prophylactic and derives from Greek roots meaning to guard beforehand. In many languages related nouns such as profülaktika or profülaktlik exist to mark prophylaxis or preventive actions.

In medicine and public health, profülaktlik covers a wide range of preventive strategies. Primary prophylaxis aims to prevent the first onset of disease, while secondary prophylaxis seeks to prevent complications or recurrence after an initial episode.
