They offered mutual aid, such as financial assistance in times of illness or death, and could act as a collective bargaining unit with authorities or customers. Guilds also often had religious affiliations and organized festivals or ceremonies.

In modern times, the concept of the professional guild has largely been replaced by professional organizations, unions, and licensing bodies. While these modern entities may share some similarities in their aims, such as promoting professional development and ethical conduct, the structure and direct control over trade entry differ significantly from historical guilds.
