Process acidulation is a chemical process used to increase the solubility of minerals, particularly phosphates, in various industrial applications. It involves treating a mineral-rich material with an acid. The most common application is in the production of phosphoric acid and phosphate fertilizers from phosphate rock. In this process, phosphate rock, which is largely insoluble calcium phosphate, is reacted with sulfuric acid. This reaction converts the insoluble calcium phosphate into soluble monocalcium phosphate and calcium sulfate. The monocalcium phosphate is the key component for fertilizer production, as it is readily absorbed by plants.

The acidulation process can be carried out in different ways. A common method is wet-process phosphoric acid production, which involves reacting finely ground phosphate rock with sulfuric acid in a slurry. This creates a mixture of phosphoric acid and solid calcium sulfate (gypsum). The gypsum is then separated from the phosphoric acid, typically through filtration. The concentration and purity of the resulting phosphoric acid depend on factors such as the type of phosphate rock, the concentration of sulfuric acid, temperature, and reaction time.

Beyond fertilizer production, acidulation is also used in the processing of other minerals and in various chemical industries. For instance, it can be employed to extract valuable metals from ores or to treat byproducts to recover useful components. The choice of acid and reaction conditions is crucial and is determined by the specific mineral being processed and the desired end product. Careful control of the process is necessary to optimize yield, purity, and economic viability, while also managing the disposal or utilization of byproducts.
