Probuditi is a verb found in South Slavic languages, especially Croatian, Bosnian, and Serbian. In standard usage, the infinitive is probuditi, but some texts spell it as pro buditi or pro- form variants. The basic meaning is to wake someone from sleep or to awaken someone. The reflexive form probuditi se means to wake up oneself.

Etymology and aspect. The verb is formed from the root bud- (to wake) with the prefix pro- or prefixed variants, functioning as a perfective counterpart to the imperfective buditi (to wake someone up, often in a repeated or ongoing sense). As a perfective verb, probuditi describes a single, completed act of waking someone; buditi is used for ongoing, habitual, or repeated waking.

Usage and conjugation. Probuditi is used to express a completed action: for example, Probudio sam ga u šest. (I woke him up at six.) Its future or imperfective forms are used when describing a planned or subsequent waking: Probudiću ga. (I will wake him.) The imperative forms include Probudi ga! (Wake him up!) and Probudite ga! (Wake him up, plural). The non-reflexive form is transitive, taking a direct object (the person being awakened); the reflexive se form, probuditi se, means to awaken oneself.

Related forms. The imperfective counterpart buditi describes waking in progress, repeated waking, or habitual waking activities, and appears in statements like On budi ljude na alarm.
