Priemysel, in economic terms, is the part of an economy that turns raw materials into finished goods through manufacturing and processing. It forms the secondary sector, distinct from the primary sector (agriculture, mining) and the tertiary sector (services). Priemysel encompasses a range of activities that produce tangible goods, from basic materials to consumer products, and, in many classifications, includes related energy generation and construction activities.

Within priemysel are several major branches. ťažký priemysel (heavy industry) includes steel, chemicals, machinery, and large-scale manufacturing. Ľahký priemysel (light industry) focuses on consumer goods such as textiles, electronics, clothing, and food processing. Energetický priemysel covers electricity and heat production, while strojárstvo and elektrotechnika represent significant subsets of manufacturing and technological development. The sector relies on capital, technology, skilled labor, and supply chains to transform inputs into usable products.

Economic role and indicators vary by country but generally include a substantial contribution to gross domestic product, employment, and exports. Priemysel supports urbanization, infrastructure development, and regional growth, while also exposing economies to cyclical volatility and global market conditions. Environmental and social considerations, such as pollution, resource use, and working conditions, influence policy and innovation within the sector.

Historical context shows a transition from traditional, labor-intensive manufacturing to more automated, high-value production. Many economies have reorganized priemysel through modernization, globalization, and specialization in advanced manufacturing and automotive, electronics, and chemical industries.
