The term originates from the Old Church Slavonic language, where "presvedenie" (пресведенье) is derived from the root meaning "holy" or "sacred." These customs were deeply rooted in Slavic paganism before the Christianization of the region and persisted in various forms even after conversion.

The rituals often involved the use of symbolic objects, such as wreaths, branches, or charms, believed to ward off evil spirits. For instance, during the Slavic New Year celebrations (similar to Christmas or the winter solstice), households would decorate their thresholds with branches of pine, fir, or other evergreens to symbolize protection and renewal. These decorations were sometimes accompanied by prayers, chants, or offerings to ensure prosperity in the coming year.

Another common practice was the "presvedenie" of crops, where farmers would perform protective ceremonies before planting or harvesting.
