Preperception is a term used in cognitive science and philosophy to denote processes that occur before conscious perceptual experience. It is typically invoked to describe stages of sensory registration and interpretation that operate without conscious awareness and that can shape later perception and behavior. In practice, preperception overlaps with concepts such as preattentive processing, preconscious processing, and subliminal perception, though its usage is informal and not standardized.

Neural substrates for preperception include early sensory cortices and subcortical pathways such as the thalamus, which extract basic features (light, color, motion, orientation) from sensory input. These signals may be shaped by top-down expectations, primes, and context, which biases which inputs are more likely to reach conscious awareness when attention is directed to the scene. The boundary between preperception and conscious perception is not fixed; some information may remain non-conscious yet influence decisions via priming or biased interpretation.

Research on preperception focuses on thresholds of detection, subliminal influence, and the conditions under which inputs are transformed from non-conscious to conscious content. Methodological issues include defining and measuring awareness, and distinguishing preperception from unconscious processing. The concept is debated and is more common in discussions of perception and consciousness than as a formal research category.
