Prefixstem is a descriptive label used in linguistic morphology to denote the unit formed when a prefix attaches to a stem. It represents the form created by combining a prefix with the base stem, before any further affixation such as additional prefixes, suffixes, or inflectional endings. The concept is used in theoretical analyses and in some computational approaches to isolate the initial derivational base of a word.

In practical terms, the prefixstem can be illustrated with English words. For the word unhappy, the prefix is un- and the stem is happy; the prefixstem is unhappy. This prefixstem may then take further affixes, as in unhappiness, where the suffix -ness attaches to the prefixstem. In languages with more complex prefixing, multiple prefixes may attach to a stem, and the resulting prefixstem can reflect that extended prefixed base.

Relationship to other terms varies by theoretical tradition. Prefixstem is not a universally standard term across grammars; some analyses prefer labels such as affixed stem or prefixed stem. Nonetheless, as a conceptual tool, prefixstem serves to describe the immediate base formed by a prefix attaching to a stem, and it can be useful in computational morphology, lexicon design, and word-formation studies.
