In neuroscience, the postsynaptic membrane is equipped with receptors and channels that detect neurotransmitters released from the presynaptic neuron and translate chemical signals into electrical or biochemical responses in the postsynaptic cell. Activation of ionotropic receptors such as AMPA and NMDA glutamate receptors typically produces excitatory responses, while GABA_A receptors mediate inhibition; metabotropic receptors trigger longer-term signaling cascades.
