Postpõhikool refers to education or training undertaken after completing basic education in Estonia. Põhikool typically lasts for nine years, and upon completion, students are around 15 or 16 years old. The term "postpõhikool" encompasses the various pathways available to students at this stage of their educational journey. These pathways are generally divided into two main categories: vocational education and general secondary education.

Vocational education, known as kutseharidus, offers practical skills and training for specific professions. This can include apprenticeships or attendance at vocational schools, preparing students for direct entry into the workforce or further specialized training. General secondary education, or gümnaasium, provides a broader academic curriculum and prepares students for higher education. This typically involves three years of study, culminating in the matriculation examination (riigieksamid), which is a requirement for university admission.
