poseu

Poseu is a word in the Catalan language that serves two grammatical functions of the verb posar (to put, to place). It is the second-person plural present indicative form, corresponding to “you (all) put,” and it also appears as the imperative for addressing multiple people, meaning “Put!” or “Place!”

Etymology and forms: Poseu derives from the Latin ponere, via the development of the verb posar in Old Catalan. In the present tense, posar follows a regular pattern for its root pos- with person-specific endings: poso, poses, posa, posem, poseu, posen. The form poseu can therefore appear in both a declarative sentence and a command, depending on context.

Usage notes: In Catalan, subject pronouns are often omitted because the verb form signals the person. Poseu is commonly followed by a direct object, as in Poseu els llibres a la taula (“Put the books on the table”). It also forms with clitics, for example Poseu-ho a la caixa (“Put it in the box”). The reflexive form poseu-vos is used when inviting a group to perform an action on themselves, as in Poseu-vos còmodes (“Make yourselves comfortable”).
