Poretests is a term used in materials science to describe tests that characterize the pore structure of porous materials. The tests quantify porosity, pore size distribution, pore throat size, pore connectivity, and related transport properties. They help relate microstructure to properties such as permeability, diffusion, mechanical strength, and catalytic performance.

Common methods include mercury intrusion porosimetry for pore size distribution over a wide range of positive pressures; gas adsorption (BET) for micro- and mesopores; X-ray computed tomography (micro-CT) and other imaging methods for 3D pore networks; capillary flow porometry for open porosity and pore throat size; and imaging-based or NMR porosimetry for complementary data. Liquid intrusion porosimetry is used for certain fluids. The choice depends on pore size range, material, and whether the sample is dry or saturated.

Applications span geology (reservoir characterization, soil porosity), civil engineering (concrete durability, pore connectivity), energy storage (battery and supercapacitor electrodes), catalysis (pore structure of catalysts), food and cosmetics filtration media, and membranes.

Procedure: prepare a representative sample, choose methods suitable for the material and pore size range, perform measurements, analyze data to derive porosity, pore size distribution, and connectivity metrics, and report uncertainties.

Interpretations should consider limitations: different methods probe different pore scales and detect open vs closed porosity; sample preparation can alter structure.
