A pontil mark, also known as a punty mark or scar, is a distinctive imperfection found on handmade glass objects. It is the residue left on the bottom of a piece of glass after it has been detached from a pontil rod. A pontil rod, also called a punty rod, is a solid iron rod used by glassblowers to support and manipulate molten glass during the shaping process. After the glass object has been blown and formed, it is often attached to a pontil rod for finishing work, such as applying handles or creating the final rim. Once these steps are completed, the object is separated from the pontil rod, typically with a sharp tap or score. This separation leaves a rough, often circular or irregular mark on the underside of the glass.
