A pontil mark, also known as a punty mark or scar, is a distinctive imperfection found on handmade glass objects. It is the residue left on the bottom of a piece of glass after it has been detached from a pontil rod. A pontil rod, also called a punty rod, is a solid iron rod used by glassblowers to support and manipulate molten glass during the shaping process. After the glass object has been blown and formed, it is often attached to a pontil rod for finishing work, such as applying handles or creating the final rim. Once these steps are completed, the object is separated from the pontil rod, typically with a sharp tap or score. This separation leaves a rough, often circular or irregular mark on the underside of the glass.

The presence of a pontil mark is generally considered a sign of authentic hand-blown glass, distinguishing it from mass-produced, machine-made items. While some pontil marks are left in their raw, sharp state, glassblowers often smooth them down to prevent scratching surfaces or causing injury. Smoothing can be achieved through grinding, polishing, or applying a secondary layer of glass. The size and appearance of the pontil mark can vary depending on the type of glass, the skill of the glassblower, and the tools used. Some collectors find pontil marks desirable, viewing them as a testament to the unique handmade nature of the piece, while others prefer pieces with a smoothly finished base.
