Polarizáció refers to the orientation of oscillations in a transverse wave. Transverse waves are those where the displacement or oscillation is perpendicular to the direction of energy transfer. Light is a prime example of a transverse wave, as its electromagnetic field oscillates perpendicular to the direction the light travels.

When a wave is polarized, its oscillations are confined to a specific plane. For example, linearly polarized light oscillates in a single plane. Unpolarized light, on the other hand, consists of waves with oscillations in all possible directions perpendicular to the direction of propagation.

Polarization can occur through various phenomena. Reflection is one common method; when unpolarized light reflects off a surface, the reflected light often becomes partially or fully polarized. Similarly, scattering of light, such as sunlight by the atmosphere, can also lead to polarization. Another method is transmission through a polarizing filter, which allows oscillations in only one specific direction to pass through, effectively filtering out other orientations.

The concept of polarization is important in understanding the behavior of light and other electromagnetic waves. It has practical applications in fields like photography (polarizing filters reduce glare), optics (polarizing microscopes), and liquid crystal displays (LCDs) used in screens. The degree and direction of polarization can be measured and analyzed, providing valuable information about the wave and its interactions with matter.
