PVB is typically supplied as a powder or granules and is processed using techniques such as extrusion, injection molding, and casting.

The primary application of polyvinylbutyral is as the interlayer material in laminated safety glass. In this role, PVB provides the crucial bonding between two layers of glass, preventing fragmentation upon impact. When the glass breaks, the PVB layer holds the shards together, significantly reducing the risk of injury from sharp edges. This property makes PVB indispensable in automotive windshields, architectural glass, and other safety glazing applications.

Beyond its use in safety glass, PVB finds applications in coatings, adhesives, and films. Its strong adhesion to various substrates, including metals and plastics, makes it a valuable component in protective coatings for metal surfaces and as a binder in paints and inks. PVB-based adhesives are used in electronics and specialized bonding applications. In film form, it can be used for heat-sealable coatings and as a release film.
