Polysulfur is a term used in chemistry to describe materials that contain chains of sulfur atoms linked by sulfur-sulfur bonds. It commonly covers two related classes: elemental polymeric sulfur, formed from elemental sulfur by heating, and organosulfur polysulfides, in which sulfur chains bridge organic groups or metal centers. In some contexts, the term has been applied to the inorganic polymer polysulfur nitride (SN)x, though this compound is usually named polysulfur nitride or polythiazyl.

Structure and properties. Polymeric sulfur consists of long S–S chains or three-dimensional networks derived from opening the cyclic S8 rings present in elemental sulfur. The chains vary in length and may be end-capped by functional groups or ions. Organosulfur polysulfides feature sulfur-sulfur linkages of varying length within a matrix of organic substituents or counterions, giving a range of physical forms from liquids to solids. The dominant feature of polysulfur materials is their high sulfur content and predominantly nonpolar character, which influence solubility, reactivity, and compatibility with complementary materials.

Synthesis. Polymeric sulfur is typically prepared by controlled thermal treatment of elemental sulfur, which induces ring-opening polymerization of S8 to form S_n chains. Organosulfur polysulfides arise commercially by reacting sulfur with sulfide sources to yield polysulfide salts (for example, alkali polysulfides such as Na2Sx) or by incorporating sulfur chains into organic frameworks through various coupling reactions. Polysulfur nitride, when encountered, is synthesized by specialized routes and represents a distinct class with different properties.

Applications and relevance. Polysulfur materials play roles in vulcanization chemistry for rubber crosslinking, where sulfur bridges enhance elasticity and durability. Polysulfide sealants and adhesives use sulfur-rich linkages for chemical resistance and environmental sealing. In energy storage, soluble polysulfide intermediates are important in lithium-sulfur battery chemistry, influencing charge transfer and capacity retention.

Safety and handling. Polysulfur compounds can be irritants and may generate hydrogen sulfide under acidic conditions. Proper ventilation, protective equipment, and standard chemical handling practices are advised.
