Polyploidejä refers to organisms that possess more than two complete sets of chromosomes. In diploid organisms, like humans, there are two sets of chromosomes, one inherited from each parent. Polyploid organisms, however, have three (triploid), four (tetraploid), six (hexaploid), or even more sets of chromosomes. This condition, known as polyploidy, is relatively common in plants and fungi, but much rarer in animals.

The presence of extra chromosome sets can lead to significant changes in an organism's phenotype, often resulting in larger cell size, increased vigor, and altered reproductive capabilities. In plants, polyploidy is a major driver of evolution and speciation, contributing to the diversity of many crop species such as wheat, cotton, and potatoes. It can also lead to the development of new traits that are not present in the diploid ancestors.

Polyploidy can arise through various mechanisms. Autopolyploidy occurs when an organism duplicates its own chromosome set, usually due to errors during meiosis or mitosis. Allopolyploidy, on the other hand, arises from the hybridization of two different species, followed by chromosome duplication. This process combines genetic material from two distinct lineages, often resulting in novel characteristics. While polyploidy can confer advantages, it can also lead to sterility if the extra chromosome sets do not pair up correctly during meiosis, making reproduction difficult.
