Common applications for polycarbonate include safety glasses, riot shields, automotive components such as headlights, electronic device casings, and reusable water bottles. It is also used in optical media like CDs and DVDs, and in construction for durable glazing. The material can be molded through injection molding, extrusion, and blow molding. While offering excellent impact strength, polycarbonate can be susceptible to scratching and degradation from UV radiation, though UV-resistant coatings can mitigate these issues. It is generally considered safe for food contact applications, but concerns about BPA leaching have led to the development of BPA-free polycarbonates.
