Polyestterit is a Finnish term referring to polyester fibers. Polyester is a synthetic polymer, a type of plastic, known for its durability, wrinkle resistance, and quick-drying properties. It is derived from petroleum and is one of the most widely used synthetic fibers in the world.

The production of polyester involves a process called polymerization, where monomers are chemically bonded together to form long chains. These chains are then melted and extruded through tiny holes to create fine filaments. These filaments can be woven or knitted into fabrics used in a vast array of products, including clothing, home furnishings like curtains and upholstery, and industrial applications such as ropes, sails, and conveyor belts.

Polyestterit is valued for its strength and resistance to stretching and shrinking. It also holds its shape well, making it a popular choice for activewear and durable textiles. While it can be blended with natural fibers like cotton to improve comfort and breathability, 100% polyester fabrics are common due to their performance characteristics. However, polyester is not biodegradable and can contribute to microplastic pollution if not managed properly. Recycling efforts are ongoing to mitigate its environmental impact.
