Polkuintegraatioon, often translated as path integration, is a fundamental concept in quantum mechanics. It provides an alternative formulation to the more commonly encountered Schrödinger equation approach for describing the evolution of a quantum system. Developed by Richard Feynman, path integration posits that the probability amplitude for a particle to transition from one point to another is the sum of contributions from all possible paths connecting these two points.

Each path in this summation is assigned a complex number, known as the amplitude, which is determined by the classical action of the path. The action, in turn, is a functional of the path itself, typically calculated by integrating the Lagrangian of the system over time. Paths that are closer to the classical trajectory (i.e., those that minimize the action) contribute more significantly to the overall probability amplitude.

Mathematically, path integration involves a functional integral over an infinite number of possible paths. This integral can be challenging to evaluate directly, but it has proven to be a powerful theoretical tool.
