Poliitikas is the set of processes and practices through which groups decide on collective goals, allocate resources, and govern communities. It involves how power and authority are distributed, how interests are negotiated, and how public policies are formed and implemented in a society.

The term has ancient roots in the word polis, the Greek city-state, and has evolved into a field of study and a form of social practice. Historically, political life ranged from formal institutions under monarchies and republics to the complex, often partisan, systems of modern states.

Political life centers on institutions such as legislatures, executives, judiciaries, and bureaucracies, as well as actors including political parties, interest groups, and social movements. Elections, policymaking, diplomacy, and administration are common activities, while public debate and consensus-building shape norms and legitimacy.

The study of poliitikas spans several subfields. Political theory examines ideas about justice, rights, and liberty; comparative politics analyzes institutions and outcomes across countries; international relations explores relations between states; and public administration focuses on implementing policy. Methodologically, it combines empirical analysis with normative inquiry.

Contemporary trends influence poliitikas, including globalization, information technology, and social media, which shape political participation and communication. Issues such as governance, accountability, corruption, polarization, and policy responses to economic and environmental challenges are central to current discourse.
