Polariseringstillstånd, often translated as "state of polarization" or "polarization state," refers to the condition of a light wave or other electromagnetic radiation that describes the orientation of its electric field oscillations. Light can be unpolarized, meaning its electric field oscillates randomly in all directions perpendicular to the direction of propagation. Alternatively, it can be polarized, where the oscillations are confined to a specific orientation.

There are several types of polarization. Linear polarization occurs when the electric field oscillates along a single straight line.
