polünoomiringi

Polünoomiringi, literally "polyomino ring" in Estonian, is a term used in some mathematical discussions to denote an algebraic structure built from polyominoes, the plane figures formed by joining unit squares. There is no universally adopted definition, and usage varies across sources. In general, a polyomino ring is conceived as an algebraic object whose elements are equivalence classes of polyominoes under translations, and whose arithmetic resembles that of a ring.

One common approach is to take the free abelian group generated by all polyominoes (up to translation) and to define a multiplication that encodes a tiling-like composition. For example, the product A·B might be defined to record all ways of combining a copy of A with a copy of B along a shared boundary to form a new polyomino, with multiplicities accounting for distinct placements. Addition is formal and corresponds to placing disjoint polyominoes side by side.

Because definitions differ, several variants exist. Some authors quotient by translations so that translates of the same shape are identified; others work with labelled copies to keep track of position. The resulting ring is primarily a tool for organizing questions in tiling, enumeration, and combinatorial invariants, rather than a classical algebra with a single canonical structure.
