Polümeratsioonimeetodid refer to the various techniques used to synthesize polymers. These methods are crucial in controlling the polymer's structure, molecular weight, and properties. Broadly, polymerization reactions can be classified into two main categories: addition polymerization and condensation polymerization.

Addition polymerization involves the joining of monomers without the loss of any atoms. This process typically proceeds through a chain reaction mechanism, often initiated by free radicals, cations, or anions. Examples include the polymerization of alkenes like ethylene to form polyethylene or vinyl chloride to form polyvinyl chloride. The key characteristic is that the repeating unit in the polymer has the same atoms as the monomer.

Condensation polymerization, on the other hand, involves the reaction between monomers with the elimination of a small molecule, such as water, methanol, or hydrogen chloride. In this process, the repeating unit in the polymer contains fewer atoms than the sum of the atoms in the reacting monomers. Common examples include the formation of polyesters from diols and diacids, and polyamides (nylons) from diamines and diacids. The molecular weight of the polymer in condensation polymerization is generally lower than in addition polymerization under similar conditions.

Other polymerization methods exist, such as ring-opening polymerization, where cyclic monomers open to form linear chains, and controlled/living polymerization techniques, which allow for precise control over polymer architecture and molecular weight distribution, leading to advanced materials. The choice of method depends on the desired polymer characteristics and the specific monomers involved.
