Polümeratsioonimeetodid refer to the various techniques used to synthesize polymers. These methods are crucial in controlling the polymer's structure, molecular weight, and properties. The primary classification of polymerization methods is based on the reaction mechanism.

Addition polymerization, also known as chain-growth polymerization, involves the successive addition of monomer units to a growing polymer chain. This process typically proceeds through a chain reaction mechanism involving initiation, propagation, and termination steps. Free radical polymerization, cationic polymerization, and anionic polymerization are common types of addition polymerization, differing in the nature of the active center that drives chain growth.

Condensation polymerization, or step-growth polymerization, involves the reaction between monomers that possess functional groups, leading to the formation of a polymer and a small molecule byproduct, such as water or methanol. The molecular weight of the polymer increases gradually as monomers react to form dimers, trimers, and eventually longer chains. Examples include the formation of polyesters, polyamides, and polycarbonates.

Other polymerization methods exist, such as ring-opening polymerization, where cyclic monomers polymerize by opening their rings. Additionally, controlled or living polymerization techniques have been developed to achieve better control over polymer architecture and molecular weight distribution. These methods, like atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) or reversible addition-fragmentation chain-transfer (RAFT) polymerization, offer enhanced precision in polymer synthesis. The choice of polymerization method depends heavily on the specific monomer, desired polymer characteristics, and industrial feasibility.
