pohjoisin

Pohjoisin is a Finnish adjective meaning “the northernmost.” It is the superlative form of pohjoinen, the word for “northern.” In Finnish morphology, adding the suffix -in to the base adjective yields the superlative. Therefore pohjoisin describes the farthest north among a group of places or geographic features. The form is used with nouns in attributive position (pohjoisin kaupunki) and can also be used predicatively (se on pohjoisin).

Common usage includes geographic descriptions and descriptions in travel writing, maps, and media. A well-known example is Nuorgam, the northernmost settlement in Finland, which is often described as the pohjoisin paikka in the country.
