Podstawczaków, known scientifically as Basidiomycota, is a large division within the fungal kingdom. This group is characterized by the presence of specialized club-shaped cells called basidia, on which sexual spores, known as basidiospores, are produced. These basidiospores are typically borne externally on the basidium, often in groups of four.

The Basidiomycota division encompasses a vast array of organisms, including familiar forms like mushrooms, puffballs, bracket fungi, and rusts. While many members of this group are macroscopic and visible to the naked eye, others are microscopic. Their ecological roles are diverse and crucial, ranging from decomposers of dead organic matter, particularly woody material, to symbiotic partners in mycorrhizal associations with plants, and even plant pathogens.

Reproduction in Basidiomycota is primarily sexual, occurring via basidiospores, but asexual reproduction through conidia can also take place in some species. The life cycle often involves a dikaryotic stage, where hyphae contain two distinct haploid nuclei, which is a hallmark of this fungal group. The genetic diversity within Basidiomycota is immense, reflecting their widespread distribution and adaptation to a multitude of environments across the globe.
