Podjetij is the Slovenian term for companies or businesses. In general usage, podjetje refers to a legal or natural person that conducts economic activity with the aim of profit. Podjetij vary in size, ownership, and form, from small family-run operations to large publicly traded corporations. They operate within the regulatory framework of a country and, in the European Union, must comply with EU competition, consumer protection, and environmental rules, in addition to national law.

Common forms in Slovenia include samostojno podjetje (sole proprietor), družba z omejeno odgovornostjo (d.o.o.), and delniška družba (d.d.). In a samostojno podjetje, the owner bears unlimited liability; in d.o.o. and d.d. liability is limited to contributed capital. D.o.o. is the most common form for small to medium enterprises; d.d. is typically for larger, often publicly traded companies.

Formation and governance: Setting up a podjetje requires registration with the national business registry, obtaining tax identification, and establishing accounting and reporting systems. Governance depends on form: sole proprietors manage themselves; companies with share capital appoint management and, in larger forms, a supervisory board and a board of directors.

Economic role and impact: Podjetij organize resources, provide goods and services, create jobs, pay taxes, and contribute to innovation and growth. They face obligations such as financial reporting, audits, corporate governance, and social responsibility expectations.

In a broader sense, podjetij are essential components of modern economies, linking producers with consumers, lenders with borrowers, and researchers with markets.
