They are designed to be huggable and often feature a realistic or stylized representation of animals, characters, or objects. The term “plush” derives from the plush material’s texture, which provides a smooth, velvety feel that is particularly appealing to children and collectors.

The history of plushies dates back to the 18th century in Europe, when small stuffed toys were produced by skilled artisans for noble families. Mass production began in the late 19th century, with industrial textile mills producing standardized designs such as teddy bears, which gained worldwide popularity after being inspired by a 1912 presidential tour. In the 20th century, licensed figures from comics, movies, and television, like Mickey Mouse and Hello Kitty, helped establish plushies as a global merchandising phenomenon. Production standards vary, and safety regulations in many countries require labeling of choking hazards and safe materials.
