Plesiomorfieën are ancestral or primitive traits that are inherited from a common ancestor. These are features that were present in the lineage of a group of organisms and have been passed down through generations. In the context of evolutionary biology and phylogenetic analysis, plesiomorfieën are contrasted with apomorfieën, which are derived or novel traits that have evolved more recently within a specific lineage.

When constructing evolutionary trees, or cladograms, the identification of plesiomorfieën is crucial but can also be a source of confusion. A plesiomorphic trait shared by two or more species does not necessarily indicate a close evolutionary relationship between them; rather, it suggests they both inherited this trait from a more distant common ancestor. For example, having a backbone is a plesiomorphic trait for all vertebrates. However, it doesn't help distinguish between a fish and a mammal because they both inherited this trait from the early vertebrate ancestor.

To establish evolutionary relationships accurately, scientists focus on synapomorfieën, which are shared derived traits. These are traits that evolved in the most recent common ancestor of a group and are present in all of its descendants. Synapomorfieën are the key indicators of monophyly, meaning a group that includes an ancestor and all of its descendants. Therefore, while plesiomorfieën are fundamental to understanding evolutionary history by tracing back traits to common ancestors, they are not typically used as the primary evidence for the sister group relationships within a cladogram.
