Plazmaferéza is a medical procedure that involves separating blood plasma from the blood cells. During the process, a patient's blood is drawn and passed through a machine that centrifuges it, separating the plasma from the red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. The plasma is then either removed and replaced with a substitute fluid or processed to remove specific components before being returned to the patient along with the blood cells.

This therapeutic apheresis technique is used to treat a variety of medical conditions. It is particularly beneficial in removing harmful antibodies, toxins, or abnormal proteins from the blood. Conditions that may be treated with plasmapheresis include certain autoimmune diseases such as Guillain-Barré syndrome, myasthenia gravis, and lupus. It can also be employed in cases of hyperviscosity syndrome, certain poisonings, and some thrombotic microangiopathies like TTP (thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura).

The procedure is generally performed in a hospital or specialized apheresis center and can take several hours. While generally safe, potential side effects can include temporary drops in blood pressure, citrate toxicity from anticoagulants used, and infection at the venous access site.
