Plateauphase is a term used in biology and related fields to describe a period during which a measurable parameter, after a phase of change, stabilizes at a relatively constant level. The concept appears across disciplines such as microbiology, pharmacology, physiology, and ecology, and the specifics of what constitutes a plateau depend on the context. The name derives from the idea of a flat, horizontal segment on a graph.

In microbiology, the plateau phase commonly refers to the stationary phase of a growth curve. After lag and exponential growth, resource depletion and waste accumulation slow replication until the net population growth approaches zero. Cells may remain metabolically active, alter gene expression, and enter various survival states, while growth in optical density or colony-forming units stays approximately constant for a period.

In pharmacology, plateau or ceiling effects describe a dose–response relationship in which higher doses do not yield a greater effect. This occurs when receptors are saturated or regulatory mechanisms limit signal transduction, resulting in diminishing returns with increasing dose. The plateau informs dosing strategies and safety considerations, as further increases can raise toxicity without enhancing efficacy.

In exercise science and physiology, a plateau phase can occur when performance gains stagnate despite continued training. Plateaus may reflect insufficient recovery, inadequate overload progression, or metabolic adaptations.
