Plastic reduction is a set of strategies aimed at decreasing the production, use, and waste of plastic materials, with emphasis on single-use and short-lived items. The goal is to reduce environmental pollution, conserve resources, and lower greenhouse gas emissions across the plastic life cycle.

Approaches include reducing demand through behavioral change and policy measures; substituting plastics with reusable alternatives or materials with lower environmental footprints; redesigning packaging to use less material or to be more recyclable; and improving collection, sorting, and recovery systems to minimize leakage into the environment.

Technological and design options include improved recycling methods (mechanical and chemical recycling), material innovations such as monomaterials, and the use of compostable plastics where appropriate. However, compostables require compatible waste streams, infrastructure, and consumer participation, and are not a universal solution.

Policy frameworks such as bans on certain single-use items, packaging redesign mandates, and extended producer responsibility schemes aim to shift responsibility, reduce waste generation, and stimulate innovation.

Challenges include contamination, limited recycling capacity, high costs, and unequal progress across regions. Measuring progress involves metrics like plastic footprint, recycling rate, and leakage rates, while life-cycle assessment helps compare tradeoffs among alternatives.

Despite progress in some sectors, plastic reduction remains uneven, with packaging and consumer goods contributing large shares of plastic waste. Ongoing efforts involve governments, industry, and citizens collaborating to redesign products, invest in infrastructure, and promote sustainable consumption.
