Plasmatorch is a device that generates a plasma jet by passing an electric arc through a gas or gas mixture. The electrical arc ionizes the gas, producing plasma, a highly conductive and extremely hot state capable of melting or vaporizing metal along a narrow path. The resulting plasma jet is directed through a nozzle for use in cutting, welding, and various material-processing applications.

Most plasmatorches comprise a power supply capable of delivering high current, a gas delivery system, a torch head with an electrode and nozzle, and a cooling mechanism. In operation, an arc is established between the electrode and the workpiece (transferred arc) or confined within the torch itself (non-transferred arc). Gas choices depend on application and may include compressed air, nitrogen, oxygen, argon, or specialized plasma gases. Cooling methods can be air-based or water-cooled to manage heat in the torch and consumables.

Common applications include plasma cutting of metals, plasma arc welding, surface modification, coating deposition, and certain waste-treatment or material-processing tasks. Plasmatorches offer fast cutting speeds, precise kerf control, and the ability to work with metals that are challenging for other processes. Limitations include equipment cost, wear of consumable electrodes, dependence on stable gas supplies, and safety considerations such as extreme heat, bright light, ozone or fumes, and electrical hazards. Proper ventilation, personal protective equipment, and training are essential for safe operation, particularly in automated or CNC-enabled environments.
