Plasmanäyttöjä, commonly known as plasma displays, are a type of flat-panel display technology that was popular for televisions and other large screens. The technology utilizes small cells containing plasma, which is an ionized gas. Each cell is a tiny fluorescent lamp, and when electricity is applied, the gas within the cell is excited and emits light. These cells are arranged in a grid to form the pixels of the image.

Plasma displays work by passing an electrical current through a mixture of noble gases, typically neon and xenon, contained within tiny chambers or cells. This current ionizes the gas, creating plasma. The energized plasma then emits ultraviolet (UV) light. This UV light then strikes a phosphorescent coating on the inside of the cell, causing it to glow and produce visible light. By controlling the intensity and color of the light emitted by each pixel, a full-color image can be created.

Plasma technology was favored for its ability to produce deep blacks and vibrant colors, along with wide viewing angles. However, plasma displays were also known for being power-hungry and prone to image retention or "burn-in" if static images were displayed for extended periods. Manufacturing costs and the rise of more energy-efficient LED-backlit LCD and OLED technologies eventually led to the decline of plasma display production.
