A planetväxellåda, also known as a planetary gearset or epicyclic gear train, is a type of gear system used in mechanical transmissions. Its name derives from the resemblance of its components to a solar system, with a central "sun" gear, surrounded by several "planet" gears. These planet gears rotate around the sun gear while also revolving around their own axes. The planet gears are typically mounted on a carrier, which can also be set in motion.

The core principle of a planetväxellåda is that by controlling the rotation of three key components – the sun gear, the planet carrier, and the ring gear (an outer gear that meshes with the planet gears) – different gear ratios and output speeds can be achieved. This allows for a compact and versatile transmission system.

One common application of planetväxellådor is in automatic transmissions for vehicles. By engaging and disengaging different combinations of these gears, the transmission can automatically shift between various gear ratios to optimize engine performance and fuel efficiency. They are also found in wind turbines for increasing the rotational speed of the rotor to that required by the generator, in electric screwdrivers, and in various industrial machinery where space is a constraint and multiple gear ratios are needed. The ability to achieve high torque multiplication in a small package is a significant advantage of this type of gearing.
