Placesitems is a conceptual data construct used to represent places as discrete items within a geographic or cultural catalog. The term combines “place” and “item” to describe a data unit that couples geographic coordinates with descriptive metadata, enabling structured storage, retrieval, and linkage of place information across platforms.

Core attributes typically included in a placesitem are: an identifier (id), name, latitude, longitude, and optional altitude; address or venue location; category or type (for example, park, museum, restaurant); tags or keywords; a short description; multimedia references (photos, audio, video); opening hours and accessibility features; contact details; and provenance information such as source and timestamp. Optional attributes may cover related items (nearby places, parent areas), relationships (events, routes), language, and quality indicators like a confidence score.

In practice, placesitems can be stored as standalone records or as wrappers around traditional place records, and are designed to be interoperable with data formats such as JSON-LD, RDF, GeoJSON, or other GIS and knowledge-graph schemas. They support operations common to geographic catalogs, including search by name, category, or location; spatial queries; and the linking of places to media, events, routes, or organizational hierarchies.

Examples and use cases include cataloging cultural heritage sites, mapping local businesses, embedding place data in travel guides, and supporting urban planning analyses. Benefits of the placesitems approach include improved interoperability, richer metadata, and easier deduplication and updating, while challenges involve deduplication, localization, data quality, and keeping provenance up to date.
