Pintajännitteitä, often translated as surface tension, is a property of liquids that causes the surface of the liquid to behave like a stretched elastic membrane. This phenomenon arises from the cohesive forces between liquid molecules. Within the bulk of the liquid, molecules are attracted equally in all directions. However, at the surface, molecules are attracted more strongly by the molecules below and beside them than by the air or gas above. This unbalanced inward pull causes the surface molecules to be packed more tightly and results in a net inward force.

This inward force leads to several observable effects. For instance, it allows small insects like water striders to walk on water. It also causes water droplets to form spherical shapes, as a sphere has the smallest surface area for a given volume, minimizing the surface energy. Raindrops are thus spherical, and dew drops on a leaf exhibit a rounded form. Pintajännitteitä is also responsible for capillary action, the ability of a liquid to flow in narrow spaces without the assistance of, and even in opposition to, external forces like gravity. This is crucial for processes like water transport in plants. The strength of pintajännitteitä varies between different liquids; for example, water has a relatively high surface tension due to its strong hydrogen bonding.
